What is muscle loss?

One of the the more physically and psychologically jarring symptoms of Male Hormone Imbalance is the loss of muscle mass. The medical term for age-related muscle loss is Sarcopenia. Sarcopenia occurs because of changes in testosterone levels and their importance to growing and maintaining muscle. Testosterone is what binds to receptors in the muscle cells, alerting the muscles to contract and grow. Muscle loss can happen over a period of years or even decades as muscles cells start to go into a state of atrophy and begin transforming muscle fibers into fat as motor neurons stop sending signals to the brain to move the muscles.  This leads to early symptoms of Sarcopenia.

  • Early signs of Sarcopenia

  • Decreased strength

  • Decrease in the Appearance of Muscle Tone

  • Lack of stamina

  • Weakness

After enough time, if left untreated, Sarcopenia can lead to a loss of independence for an individual as they no longer have the strength and mobility to complete daily tasks on their own.

Dietary Causes of Muscle Loss

Nutritional factors, such as a lack of protein or a diet high in sugar, can contribute to Sarcopenia. Muscles need protein to grow and maintain strength, while consuming too much sugar can stop some of the positive effects protein has on the muscles. A man’s body requires complete proteins 4 to 5 times a day to produce enough amino acids to build, maintain and repair muscles.

Protein also keeps the body from “burning muscle”. Protein keeps the muscles from being used as energy during strenuous physical activity. When there is not enough protein in a man’s body, it leads to the destruction of muscle fibers and less muscle mass.

When Should Men Worry About Sarcopenia?

The signs of Sarcopenia can begin as early as age 25, but usually affects most men more severely in their 60s. As men age and lower their activity level, the slow process of atrophy will begin. Most men only experience a .05% decrease in muscle mass each year after they turn 25, but the number doubles by age 60 and quadruples by age 70.

Where can Men Turn for Help with Sarcopenia?

As with other symptoms of Andropause and Male Hormone Imbalance, treatment at a certified Men’s Health and Rejuvenation clinic with licensed physicians, who specialize in combating the effects of Sarcopenia, could be the best course of action. A facility like this can test a man’s testosterone levels to determine the most effective and safest form of treatment going forward.

At NuMale the treatment of choice is Bioidentical Testosterone Replacement Therapy. The term bioidentical means the testosterone being used will be an exact match of the hormone produced in the male body in chemical makeup and molecular structure. Bioidentical Testosterone Replacement Therapy involves putting testosterone pellets the size of a Tic-Tac under the skin. The pellets slowly dissolve, infusing hormones into the body. This therapy can usually begin the same day of the patient’s first visit after their testosterone and estrogen levels are tested. The procedure is a quick, painless in-office procedure with effects that are felt within days and results that last 5-6 months.

  • Benefits of Bioidentical Testosterone Replacement Therapy

  • Painless

  • Quick-Usually Done the Same Day as 1st Visit

  • Effects of Therapy Begin within Days

  • Long-Lasting Results

A visit to a NuMale Medical Center to consult with a qualified licensed physician is the best course of action for many men suffering with muscle loss as a result of Male Hormone Imbalance. At our facility men, along with their physician, can discuss the patient’s symptoms and discuss the best treatment to combat Male Hormone Imbalance-linked muscle loss and its symptoms. Each treatment plan will be tailored to the individual patient’s needs as no two Sarcopenia cases are alike.

Bioidentical Testosterone Therapy for Muscle Loss

This therapy has many benefits, including preventing atrophy and mass loss for those who wish to increase their testosterone levels, which are vital to muscle growth and maintenance. TRT therapy helps gain mass because it increases the production of testosterone; therefore, the muscles can be availed of more growth stimuli and maintained. This therapy also enhances the endurance capacity of patients in that they can take up physical activities to gain mass easily. TRT increases body bone density and decreases the risk of fractures from physical activities. TRT goes beyond the physical benefits because it can improve mood and motivation to continue exercising.

Lifestyle Interventions

Fighting off muscle loss and keeping Sarcopenia at bay requires regular workout routines that force your muscles to work against resistance. Exercise such as weight lifting or resistance training (for instance, pushups or resistance training) are recommended. Making wise lifestyle decisions such as not smoking or drinking too much booze, getting enough restful sleep, and managing stress effectively can have a significant effect on hormone levels and muscle health. Combining lifestyle changes, proper eating, and possible medical interventions such as bioidentical testosterone therapy to lessen Sarcopenia’s effects can have great success in lessening its severity.
